BURIED LIGHT
These works were produced when I lived in the old gold mining town of Charters Towers, west of Townsville. The landscape has been degraded by mining activities since 1872 with very little attempt of restoration in its semi-arid tropical climate. The fortunes of many of the local population were still linked to the hope that another gold strike might appear, creating a community suffering stasis and inability to move towards a more sustainable future.

With my concern for the environment being challenged on a daily basis, these works reflect the love of gold by some, the abuse of water and resources associated with the practice of contemporary open cut mining and, the idealised and less destructive love of the continuation of natural cycles.
